Aldine Williams said in a note dated 1/24/81 that Maggie, her mother , was 79 years, 1 mo., 2 weeks & 3 days old, when she died. That is consistent with the calculations made with the computer. See Neosho County, KS, 1880 census at Vol 14, E.D.165, Sheet 12, Line 20, which confirms she was born in Kansas, and was age 6 at or during the census year. Maggie was somewhat homely, even as a young girl , and became progressively more striking in her appearance. In later pictures she reminds one of a stern Mark Twain, including bristling eyebrows and a sparse mustache. During her last years, she became increasingly senile and often wandered the streets of Nowata, OK after George Williams died. She then had to reside in a nursing home, the hospital, and eventually, Eastern Oklahoma Mental Hospital, at Vinita, OK, where she died of cancer. Bill Bonner recalls a trip with her and Melville Williams after George Williams death in 1949, to Albuquerque, which was terrifying, both as she talked to a dead husband and to her confusion over the monstrous lightning storm and rain storm that overtook them near Tucumcari , NM. He also recalls that she could still play a mean game of Chinese checkers for several years thereafter, until about 1951 or 1952 , when he was staying with her after school to keep her company. |
