Funeral services for Mrs. Hybernia Corlew McMillan, age 99 of Charlotte were conducted Tuesday September 3, 2013 at 2 P.M. from the Charlotte Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Bro. Dean Guye officiating . Those desiring, Memorials may be made to the Charlotte Cumberland Presbyterian Church or to the Charity of Your Choice. Place of rest is in the Leech Cemetery. Services were under the direction of the Taylor Funeral Home. Hybernia died Friday August 30, 2013 at N.H.C. Health Care Center in Dickson. She was the daughter of the late Wetherston (Wed) Monroe and Lucy Lillian Corlew. She graduated from Charlotte High School and attended Austin Peay State College. After teaching in the Dickson County School System for five years, she moved to Nashville and worked at Belle Meade Country Club. She married Joseph A. McMillan, Jr. in 1941 prior to his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1945, she began a career with the U.S. Postal Service that spanned 40 years, 25 of which were as the Postmaster in Charlotte. She retired in 1986 because her only grandchild, Charles Stuart McMillan, was born that year and she and her son, Joseph, wanted to be available to spend as much time as possible with him. She was a lifelong member of the historic Charlotte Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder for several years. Both her great-grandfather and her husband's great-grandfather were instrumental in the building of the church. This early connection with the church might have helped to cultivate an appreciation for history, genealogy and antiques as she was frequently contacted by others on such matters. She and other Charlotte residents were active in the resurgence of the Dickson County Historical Society in earlier years and she has held the title of Director Emeritus of the Dickson County Historical Society. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and particularly enjoyed her visits to England and France in the late 1970s. She loved her life in Charlotte with family and friends but enjoyed seeing what large cities had to offer in terms of historical sites, good food and particularly fashion opportunities. Shopping was a favorite pastime and she never passed an opportunity to go to Nashville with family, friends, or by herself in hopes of getting something new and stylish to wear. Scarves were one of her passions of which she had many different colors and styles. She loved flowers, especially roses. She enjoyed having fresh roses in their home and frequently they were provided by a good friend in the community. One of her distinguishing qualities was her determination in seeing to the welfare of her special needs son, Joseph. She cared for him until she was almost 96 years of age and always made certain that he not only had all the care he needed but also that he got to see and do many of the things he loved and that other children got to do. They went to local ballgames as well as many major league games. Whether she enjoyed being at these games, sometimes during hot weather, we will never know...what made her happy was seeing Joseph enjoy himself. Her tenacity assured that he lived his life to the fullest. She held memberships in NARFE, National League of Postmasters (50+ years), the American Legion Auxiliary (63 years), Dickson County Historical Society and service on the Dickson County Library Board. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Joseph A. McMillan Jr.; son, Joseph A. McMillan III; her sister, Anna Katherine Corlew Miller; and her brothers, Jack Corlew; J.W. Corlew; and Clarence Corlew. The family wishes to thank the employees, healthcare staff and volunteers of NHC in Dickson and Caris Healthcare for their wonderful care and attention. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Susan McMillan of Nashville, TN; grandson, Charles Stuart McMillan of New York City, NY; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
