Robert Henry Carter enlisted, 2 October 1861, in Company "E" 11th Texas Cavalry Regiment (CSA). He was promoted to Sergeant (SGT) and, on 31 August 1864, he was wounded and captured near Knoxville, Tennessee. He was a prisoner-of-war (POW) and later was attached to Company "E" 5th United States Volunteer Infantry (USVInf). He received his discharge from miltary service on 11 October 1866. He subsequently became a Dry Goods store clerk in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas. His tombstone inscription reads "In memory of my dear Husband".
