He worked at the Salant-Salant shirt factory in Paris and at Camp Tyson before being inducted into the Army in July 1943. During the war he fought in Africa, England, and France before being discharged in December 1946. After the war he was employed by the Paris Board of Public Utilities, working as a lineman until the winter of February 1953 when a hot line produced serious injuries. Upon his recovery, he monitored the sewage treatment plant in Paris for BPU until his retirement in September 1977.

Mr. Cate was the son of Tom & Alma Wimbish Cate, now deceased. He was married Dec. 24, 1936, to the former Ruth Mildred Hastings, who died Dec. 19, 1994. Mr. Cate graduated from Henry High School in the 1930's and was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired from the Paris Board of Public Utilities, were he was a lineman and supervisor. He leaves four sisters: Raye Powers and husband Albert, Sara Scott and Faye Jones, all of Paris, and Martha Berlin and husband Leon of Atlanta; Two brothers: Thomas Edward Cate and wife Billy of Henry and James Cate and wife Marie of Springville. He also leaves a special friend Evelyn Wesley, and several neices and nephews.
