From the 16 Apr 1996 issue of the San Angelo Standard Times in San Angelo, TX. Local Republican Party mourns loss of `linchpin' By BOB BECKNELL. A man known in San Angelo political circles as ``Mr. Tom Green County Republican'' died Sunday at age 58. John Robert Groseclose initiated his involvement in local, state and national political affairs shortly after he arrived in San Angelo in 1953 and helped establish the Republican Party in Tom Green County. "He was the linchpin which the party has relied on for a good long while,'' said Charles Hooker, a former Republican Party chairman. Groseclose twice was elected party chairman, served two terms with the State Republican Executive Committee and represented San Angelo and area Republicans as a member of the 25th Senatorial District Committee. During his early career, Groseclose was employed as a ``field man'' who helped organize Republicans and helped them run for office, said Larry Hatfield, another former party chairman. ``He singlehandedly got the Tom Green County campaign going for Ronald Reagan in 1976,'' Hatfield said. He also was employed by former Texas Gov. Bill Clements' gubernatorial campaign. ``Politics was his life. He was very good at it,'' Hatfield said. Hooker said Groseclose was a mathematician who was very helpful to candidates needing statistical analysis of elections and voting trends. ``He worked very hard to enhance the Republican Party. His death will definitely leave a void that may never be filled,'' Hooker said. Groseclose served as Union Bus Station's office manager until recently when he retired due to poor health. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Johnson's Funeral Home. William Clifford Wade Sep 2013 recollectins of his "Uncle Boa" are: "Uncle Bob attended UT in math / physics and Nuc Phy in the 60's, and came home sick (for about 5 years). We always figured he got nuked. Spent most the rest of his adult life as a Rep Party worker, including Dist 25 Rep Party "advisor". I was an alternate del at the Tex Rep Convention in 74, cause Bob always got me involved in his projects. Cant tell you how many env. I stuffed, posters I nailed to T. Poles, etc. I did for Bob when I was a kid and when he eventually got into politics. We were Rep (all of the immediate fam.), and in those days, in San Angelo, if you wanted to get elected as dog catcher, you better be a Dem."
