Elmo George Barnes registered for the military draft on 16 Oct 1940 ins Stillwater, Payne, OK. He was born 13 Feb 1919 in Merrick, OK; was a student at Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater; and resided at 76 College Circle in Stillwater with his mother, Mrs. Ledru Barnes (their phone number was 514). Elmo George Barnes, 83, Perkins, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in Stillwater Medical Center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Perkins United Methodist Church. Rev. J. M. Shepherd will officiate. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Barnes was born Feb. 13, 1919, to Ledru and Hazel (Haver) Barnes in Merrick. Barnes lived in Merrick and Wellston before moving to Stillwater in 1934. He graduated from Stillwater High School and attended Oklahoma A & M College where he was active in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and various organizations in the schools of business and engineering. In 1941, he went into defense work in Buffalo, N.Y., for Bell Aircraft. In 1942, he moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he was inspector and superintendent of welding for Willys-Overland Motor Company.

Barnes married Inez Christy Hindes Aug. 26, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio, where the couple lived until he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Sill in July, 1944. He served in the infantry at Camp Fannin in Tyler, Texas, until being discharged from the service in April, 1946. The couple then moved to Perkins. (They lived there the rest of their lives and also operated a Hereford ranch, southwest of town. This ranch was taken over and operated by their son, Kent.) Barnes was an active member of the Perkins United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Perkins Lion Club in which he served as president and various offices, receiving the Outstanding Member award in 1983. He was director of the Payne County Bank, a member of the Perkins Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Payne County Election Board for the past 20 years. He served 30 years on the Payne County Fair Board, two terms as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Town of Perkins and 20 years on the Perkins Fire Department until retiring . He was a member of the Perkins Masonic Lodge No. 92 and was a past commander and member of the American Legion Post 211. He was a long time member and director of the Northern Oklahoma Hereford Association, a director and charter member of the Payne County Cattlemen Association, a member of the Oklahoma Cattlemen Association and a director of the Oklahoma Hereford Association. He also served many years as superintendent of Hereford Cattle at the Tulsa State Fair. He vigorously supported the bonus sale and junior livestock shows, offering Hereford show calves to the young show persons with great pride, and supporting them to the best of his ability on the local, county and state level.

Barnes was predeceased by his parents; one daughter, Karen Jill; and three sisters, Frances Barnes, Elaine Crable and Eula Williams. He is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Kent Christy Barnes and his wife, Diana, of Hulbert; one daughter, Ellen Ledru Wortham and her husband Tom of Perkins and Edmond; seven grandchildren, K.C. and Hallie Mae Barnes, Tobi, Piper, Paige and Travis Dickson and Bryan Wortham; and one brother, Eugene Lyle Barnes of Stillwater.
