Verne T. "Red" Smythe, 80, Benton, died Feb. 7, 2006 at Southwest Health Center, Platteville. He was born Jan. 3, 1926 in Benton, the son of William and Ada (Nix) Smythe. He retired from John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works. He served in the Navy during World War II. He loved flying and being around his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards at Leadmine. Verne belonged to the Benton VFW and American Legion. He is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Tom) Smythe Peart, Benton; three sons: William Thomas (Deb) Smythe, Ottawa, Ill.; Sheldon Charles (Kelli) Smythe, Cedar Hills, Texas; James Dale Smythe, Maui, Hawaii; his grandchildren: Angelaina (Eric Thom) Smythe, Dubuque, Iowa; Dallas (Justin Engle) Kruser and Amie Kruser, both of Benton; Max Smythe, Nicholas Smythe, Liam Smythe and Emilie Smythe, all of Cedar Hills, Texas; Jonathon Smythe, Ottawa, Ill.; a great-grandchild, Riley Arthur Engle; and two brothers: Bill (Phyllis) Smythe and Charles (Wilma) Smythe, both of Janesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ada Smythe, and two sisters, June Smythe Tarkett and Norma Smythe Symons. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date. The Casey Funeral Home, Benton, is in charge of arrangements. 2/17/2006.
